ACTIVITIES
M & M (MARVELOUSLY MATURE) GROUP: We sing some
of the great old songs we remember from our youth, learn something new from a
speaker, or just let someone entertain us, play table games and eat a great
potluck lunch together. (And we have some terrific cooks.)
On the Monday evening following the monthly
meeting we meet to enjoy a movie (again the oldies, but goodies), with
refreshments provided. Sometimes we pile in the church van for trips to
concerts, plays, or to see Christmas lights or go interesting places such as
museums or shopping.
There are no dues, no fees, no membership
requirements. We're, mostly, Blanco County residents, aged 55 or better, who
come together to celebrate good
times with old friends and new.
Membership is open to all mature adults in the area.
Meets 1st Wednesday at 10 am at the Johnson City 1st
Methodist Church, in the Wesley Activity Center.
For more information contact the First United
Methodist Church office at 830-868-7414.

May, 2007, AARP's Driver Safety Course:
Carol Schlacter of Johnson City gets a question answered by Jake Wiggins
of Burnet, the instructor for the AARP's Driver Safety course taught at the
First United Methodist Church of Johnson City. The course was sponsored by the
Marvelously Matures seniors group at the church. Wiggins told the students
common driver mistakes change as a driver ages. For example, speeding and
reckless driving tend to be problems of immature drivers, while the most
frequent error made by older drivers is not recognizing who has the right-of-way
in a situation, followed by improper left turns.
Marvelously Matures
chair Mary Frances Madison said the church office will gather names of
interested drivers, and the group will bring the AARP course back when there are
enough to fill a class.
FREE FAMILY MOVIES:
First UMC Launches 2008 Free Family Movie Series: Free Family Movie
Night, the popular monthly film series at Johnson City's First United Methodist Church, has launched its 2008 series of Monday night films.

Free-Movie Program Opens Fall Season:
The Free Family Movie series at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City launches its fall season with the musical comedy, "Meet Me In St. Louis", at 7 pm Monday, September 8.
The show tells the story of an extended family in St. Louis of 1903, and the various members' expectations for the coming world's fair.
Stars include Judy Garland, Chill Wills, Margaret O'Brien and Mary Astor. The movie introduced several hit songs, including "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "The Trolly Song", and the title tune, "Meet Me In St. Louis".
October's show, on the 6th, will be a wild west double feature, starring Gene Autry in "Springtime in the Rockies" and a youthful John Wayne in "Hell Town". Expect shoot-em-ups, fights and chases galore.
The fall series concludes November 10th with a giant finale: "Giant".
It's a giant film -- more than two hours long -- with a giant cast -- Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean, and lots more. And it caused a giant ruckus when it showed Texans in a light they considered inappropriate.
All movies include classic cartoons. Many also have vintage shorts.
Admission and refreshments are free and everyone is welcome.
